Dan Gorham: Human heart Package design

Here the brief was to re-design the packaging in which a human heart was contained for transportation for a heart transplant.

My idea was to not only think about the packaging itself, I wanted to push and challenge the brief, so it wouldn't just be a piece of package design. "A brief is a guidline, why not challenge and push it to create something new". Thats the way I think of things.

My target audience was small children. I straight away noticed from my research the unhappiness and anxiety that is caused from the procedure of the operation. So I wanted to create a fun and happy concept in which a child's game could be packaged in way that it could be separated on arrival, game to child, heart to surgeon.

The game concept I felt was a fairly strong idea, this meant the child could interact with the subject matter, whilst having fun and taking that anxiety away before the operation.

This then gave me a concept and reason in which to produce this piece of packaging, and could also be used in real life if was pitched to the NHS, to be considered by scientists for approval. "Obviously it was a college brief, so I wont be pitching it to the NHS" :).

The design process of this packaging made my brain set on fire, there are things that work and things that I could have done different to improve it, but the overall concept and final designs I am pleased with.
